Open and ongoing communication with all families is essential for building trust and effective collaboration around a child’s literacy development. When communication is open, families feel welcomed to ask questions, share insights, and express language or cultural considerations, and they can participate in a two-way dialogue about goals, progress, and supports. Maintaining regular updates through multiple channels—newsletters, emails, phone calls, conferences, and informal conversations—keeps information accessible and timely rather than limited to special events or reports. This approach recognizes families as partners, invites their input, and aligns with equity by ensuring every parent has opportunity to stay informed and involved.

Closing and restricting communication, delaying and avoiding it, or relying on a rigid, formal, and frequent style all miss the core idea of accessible, collaborative, two-way engagement with families and communities.
